Have you ever seen a clay dragon sculpture so detailed and lifelike you wondered if it could in fact be an actual dragon? Sculpting is used in movies and shows, plays, dramas, and so much more! And Verity is right smack in the center of it by creating these amazing dragons and other sculptures as well as beautiful drawings. And she also does it for the magic of film. :)

Even since I was little I was always obsessed with creatures and monsters, specifically dragons. I would constantly be drawing them for my family and friends in my classes at school. I remember always wanting to be an artist when I grew up- whatever that meant. Everywhere I went, I needed to be drawing something- be it on my desk, the back of the kid’s menus at restaurants, or in my very first sketchbook, which I still remember.

When I was about 9 to 11 years old, I started to take things a little bit more seriously. I played a lot of Neopets at the time, and I am certainly not ashamed to say that it was that game which really brought out my love of drawing! I would draw comics and cartoons all the time, and when I was 13 I got my first Wacom tablet. I was hooked- I would spend every free minute I had on my computer, practicing with my tablet. At this time I discovered DeviantArt, and I became more obsessed. DA allowed me to have an incredible wealth of references and art available at my fingertips, and I would constantly be on the search for new artists to be inspired by, many of which I still follow today.

I am mainly a sculptor now, but I still enjoy drawing dragons more than anything. Sculpting creatures and dragons is a really rewarding way to see physical representations of my own designs. I think that is what has always drawn me to dragons- the fact that they can be absolutely anything. Any shape, size, design, element, you name it. Dragons are the embodiment of imagination and you can never get bored with creating and playing with new designs.

Everyone creates, designs, and learns things differently. With this in mind, I’ve tried to include a variety of articles/resources on clay dragon sculptures below and will continue to add more even after the article is published. Most of these resources are free but others include classes or resources that are paid.

Film Sculptor:

Someone who uses their sculptor skills for film in some way. This can include anything from what is needed to be added in scene to actually creating sculptures around the room in a scene.

The Art Career Project discusses all the ways you can become a sculptor from what it is like to be a sculptor, several interviews with actual sculptors, an infographic about becoming a sculptor, training recommended and the different types, and how to build your business as a sculptor. It ends with additional resources for sculptors with different societies such as the World Sculptor’s Associations & Societies (sculptor.org), and the Royal British Society of Sculptors.

Movies Sculptors is a list of several movie sculptors and a description of each one. However, while at this website you can also explore other artists from all over the world.

Starting your Sculptor Business:

Creative SkillSet is an article about what being a sculptor is all about and how people do this in film, what their role is and what types of skills they would need. However, there are a number of other Creative Skillsets as well on this website that are all in film.

Jessica Serran is quite literally a tutorial on a step by step guide for how to become a professional artist. She also has other articles on her page about healing art, growing your business, and more.

About Sculpture is a specific article about how to start selling your sculptures. However, the website is full of articles about sculpting from the history of sculpture, to sculpting techniques, to learning to sculpt and sculpting groups, and tips for making specific types of sculptures.
