Hello there my friend!!! Today I am excited to start the How to Knit Stitch Tutorials Series! To start this tutorial series is Claire of King and Eye Co. She has created several knitting tutorials for you to start learning how to knit to include how to cast on, do a slip knot, and your first and foundational stitch the knit stitch. As I will be learning along side of you on this knitting journey, I’m excited to get started!!

How to Knit Stitch and Cast on for Beginning Knitters

By Michele of VAMICreations and Claire of King and Eye Co

You can also find more about Claire and her beautiful yarns as well as find large needles to start your first knitting project on her interview with us. And if you’re wanting to start chunky crochet, you can find her Chunky Crochet Shell Stitch Tutorial with us as well as start learning to crochet here.

You can also find her patterns, yarns, knitting needles, and kits in her Etsy Shop.

To start with knitting, we need to learn how to first create a slip knot which you can find how to do in her short tutorial of how to make a slip knot:

After you do a slip knot (which is very similar to the slip knot needed for crochet), you’ll need to learn to cast the yarn on the needles. You can find this on her video about how to complete a cable cast on method using your yarn and needles.

Using both the slip knot and the casting on techniques, you’re now ready to start with the basic Knit Stitch, which you can find Claire’s tutorial below: How to Knit the basic Knit Stitch.

And you’ve done it!!! You’ve officially started knitting. :) :). So, what did you think? What were some questions you had about the tutorials? Comment below or tag us on social media to show what you’ve created with your new skills :)

Claire will be showing us one more stitch in the next tutorial the Purl Stitch. You can also find out more about knitting on her website and we’ll be including a number of her patterns as well as others that you can start practicing your new found knowledge. And sign up for our email below to know when the next Knitting Stitch Tutorial is posted!

BHooked does both Crochet and Knitting and has a number of tutorials for also learning how to cast on and a number of other knitting stitches. You can find both the left handing cast on and left handed knit stitch/garter stitch links below.

So interestingly, when the knit stitch is continually done throughout a pattern it is also known as the garter stitch :). As such we have listed several patterns or places to find patterns using this stitch below and I will be continually adding them as I find more. Let me know if you find others and I can’t wait to see what you make!!

Knitfarious has several posts with round-ups of easy beginner knitting patterns using the garter stitch and they (shawls, blankets, hats, etc) are a great way to practice this first and foundational stitch.

The Spruce Craft has several great beginner patterns using all of what you have learned above. To include a garter stitch scarf, tie and many more that can be found in the list of garter stitch projects.

You can find several garter stitch knitting patterns on Youtube to include one for a pair of slippers with So Woolly, a washcloth with Jayda in Stitches, and an easy heart pattern with Studio Knit.
